Of
the eleven tunes in this collection, two are originals by Tony Barnard,
the remainder are much loved show tunes or jazz standards and all
more than forty years old. Don't imagine however, that the guitarists
here are nothing more than sentimental traditionalists. While Messrs.
Barnard and Mullen are very aware of the history of jazz guitar they
are nevertheless forward looking men, very much in tune with new developments.
Indeed, Jim Mullen's ability to successfully collaborate with funky
fusion, blues and rock tinged bands as well as straight ahead jazz
groups in widely acknowledged. . A fondness for older tunes merely
underlines that the melodic lyricism and warm harmonic logic provided
so prolifically by the great Broadway songsmiths and by a number of
jazz stars, remain the most rewarding source material for improving
upon... for storytelling. |
