The first consultation involves an extensive diagnosis with many questions. Background on past history is required including previous accidents, emotional traumas, and other treatment.

Important aspects of diagnosis include taking the pulse. This can highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the energy system so as to determine which organs need to be balanced.

The tongue is also observed for its colour, cracks, thickness and placing of coating, all of which are used to diagnose and determine the progression of an illness. Often a patient may see changes in the tongue before relief is felt from the symptoms. In other instances a patient may feel an improvement in the condition, but the tongue still shows imbalance. Further treatment is then required to give a lasting cure.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine (disposable) needles in specially selected trigger points to adjust the flow of energy and restore harmony. Commonly six to ten needles are used, with most points being below the elbows and knees.

Heiko has also researched the effect of using a combination of crystals and light lasers to stimulate traditional acupuncture points. He has found that this recently developed healing system increases the healing potential, particularly in the more degenerative and chronic diseases.

Chinese Herbal Medicine can come in the form of herbal pills, herbal granulated concentrates and the most common method is in a form of herbal infusion (strong herbal tea). Sometimes external applications are used in the form of herbal washes, poultices and plasters.
